Sample ImageMTB, July 23 2009: The recently published Montserrat: A Guide to the Centre Hills, was launched at the Montserrat National Trust on July 23rd, 2009.  This comprehensive 140-page full colour book provides an insight into the unique biodiversity of the Centre Hills, which is home to a dazzling array of plants and animals, with some such as the Montserrat Oriole, found nowhere else on earth.  The Guide provides information on the eight (8) main hiking trails and what you can see on each trail.  A team of local and international specialists have also provided up-to-date accounts and colour photographs of many of the plants, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, birds and bats found in the Centre Hills forests.

The Guide is a collaborative effort of many partners and was authored by Steve Holliday of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), with supporting contributions from Sarah Sanders, Colin Clubbe, Martin A. Hamilton, Stephen R. Mendes, Richard P. Young, Agnieska Ogrodowczyk, Geoff M. Hilton, Matthew N. Morton and Scott C. Pedersen.  Funding support for the publication of the Guide was provided by the Montserrat Tourist Board, the UK Government's Department for International Development (DFID) and the European Union (EU).

Commenting on the publication of the Guide to the Centre Hills, Director of Tourism Ernestine Cassell said, “We at the Montserrat Tourist Board are proud to have played an instrumental part in producing this important book, which showcases the terrestrial flora and fauna of Montserrat.  This Guide will provide invaluable support to the Tourist Board’s current efforts to target the bird watching and soft adventure tourism markets.”

Copies of the Guide are available for sale at EC$40 or US$15 per copy and all proceeds from the sale will go towards maintaining the trail network in the Centre Hills.  For information on purchasing this Guide contact the Montserrat Tourist Board at (664) 491 2230/8730 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
